Why are NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.) on the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol List to avoid?

NSAIDS…first off what does it stand for? NSAIDS is an acronym for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These are very common drugs and can be purchased pretty much at any grocery or drug store and consist of some of the following: anti-diarrheal, laxatives, oral contraceptives, hormone replacements, antibiotics, and acid reflux drugs. A handful of others are included in that list and they come in a variety of brands, regardless, they are all contrary to the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol.

What do they do to the body that gets them on the list?

As is the case with many of the other items on the AIP protocol list, NSAIDS increase small intestinal permeability and causes inflammation. The reasons for this aren’t entirely clear but studies among several groups are being conducted to understand why this happens. Once we have the latest we’ll be sure to share.

This being said, many people with autoimmune diseases are taking medications that fall in the realm of the NSAIDs, so what does this mean? First and foremost, Autoimmune Health & Nutrition IS NOT a medical practice and we DO NOT advocate for anyone to stop taking the medications their doctors have prescribed to them. This would be unwise and again IS NOT endorsed by Autoimmune Health & Nutrition.*

When Anne (see post here) started her journey toward managing her symptoms she didn’t go cold turkey on any of her medications. She continued to follow the regiment outlined by her Medical Doctor but, in time as she continued living the autoimmune paleo protocol the Medical Doctor started to remove certain medications as improvement occurred. She eventually was naturally able to get off all of her medication but over a period of two plus (2+) years. *

It is critical that all who have autoimmune diseases don’t go rouge and try to manage their health by themselves. As smart people always say, “use wisdom”. This huge movement to eat right is spreading over the whole world but don’t forget that centuries of medical knowledge still plays a huge part in becoming healthy for anyone.*

We hope that you and your family can continue on the path to healthy living by finding a strong balance with conventional wisdom and eating right. Give our AIP and Paleo Protein a try, it is a good option. We are rooting for you!*
